Industry Brief, September 28, 2026: A $30,000 humanoid, Tesla's Semi plant, UK skills

Today's digestFor automation buyers: a U.S. startup sells a $30,000 modular humanoid for developers, Tesla opens its Semi truck plant, and the UK plans a union-run training fund.

A quieter news day, so three stories. A U.S. startup is selling a modular humanoid robot for $30,000, and its investor compares that price with a year’s wages. Tesla has opened its first plant built to make its electric Semi truck in volume, with a production target and an uptime claim worth reading closely. And the UK chancellor is set to bring back a union-run training fund that covers advanced manufacturing skills. As always, the writing is ours, each item links to the original outlet, and vendor numbers are labelled as vendor numbers.

A $30,000 modular humanoid, sold to developers rather than factories

Feather Robotics, a humanoid startup founded in 2025, is selling a modular robot platform aimed at software developers, TechCrunch reports. Co-founder Hoa Mai’s previous humanoid startup was sold to 1X; fellow co-founder Parsa Bakhtiari is a former Tesla Model 3 engineer. Gradient Ventures led Feather’s previously announced $7.6 million pre-seed round.

The pitch is that buyers get hardware and software they can build on now, instead of waiting for a general-purpose robot “brain”. The hardware is modular, so developers can change things like arm length for a given job, and it can run AI models from providers including Nvidia, Skild and Physical Intelligence. According to TechCrunch, Feather has passed $1 million in revenue, and Mai said it has been selling small quantities. Feather does not name customers, but says its robots are working as cooks in restaurants and cleaning up science labs. Mai said the company has resolved “almost all” of the issues found in a year of field testing and is getting ready for a big product launch.

The robot costs $30,000, which TechCrunch says is about half the price of Unitree’s H2 Edu. TechCrunch also notes that new foreign-made models are now restricted from entering the U.S. market, which leaves Feather as a home-grown option. Darian Shirazi, a general partner at Gradient and so an investor, compared the price with hiring a labourer for $50,000 to $60,000 a year, who would also need training and HR support.

Why it matters: A $30,000 price tag is a useful marker, but read what it buys. TechCrunch describes a platform for developers to build applications on, not a finished cell that arrives ready to run a job. The investor’s comparison with a year’s wages leaves out programming, tooling, safety assessment and integration. On a typical robot cell, our planning estimate is that the robot is only about 25-40% of the delivered cost; our guide to the hidden costs of automation lists the rest, and our cobot price tracker gives a comparison for arms that already do factory work. If a humanoid vendor quotes you a price, ask what it includes and who writes the application.

Tesla opens its Semi truck plant, with an uptime claim to read carefully

Tesla opened its first factory for high-volume production of the Semi, its heavy-duty electric truck, in Sparks, Nevada, on Thursday, September 24, CNBC reports. The Semi was unveiled in 2017, and Tesla began selling it in very limited numbers to early customers, including PepsiCo, in 2022. Dan Priestley, Tesla’s director of Semi truck engineering, said the company plans to build 50,000 Semis a year at the plant, or about 1,000 a week (our arithmetic: 50,000 divided by 52 weeks is about 960), and to bring more than 3,000 jobs to Nevada during the ramp.

There are orders behind the plan. CNBC says the ZET SCALE industry coalition selected Tesla as its primary manufacturer for an initial order of 2,500 Semis, and trucking firm Einride agreed to order 500. Tesla does not list a price, but the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) has reported that higher-end long-range Semis have been priced at around $290,000. Tesla says the long-range version can travel an estimated 500 miles on a full battery and the standard version an estimated 325 miles (our conversion: about 805 km and 523 km).

Priestley said Semis in fleet operations have shown 98% uptime and rarely needed unscheduled maintenance. Tesla is setting up its own service network and will send mobile technicians for repairs when possible. On Tesla’s July earnings call, Elon Musk said the company expects to get self-driving working on the Semi “probably around the end of this year or early next year”; CNBC notes his long history of missing deadlines for driverless vehicles, and that Aurora Innovation and Kodiak AI are already testing driverless trucks and hauling cargo for partners.

Stat card: Tesla Semi plant in Sparks, Nevada. 50,000 Semi trucks a year planned, more than 3,000 jobs during the ramp, a long-range Semi price of around $290,000 as reported by the ICCT, and 98% fleet uptime as claimed by Tesla.
Figures as reported by CNBC; the uptime figure is Tesla's claim and the price is the ICCT's. Graphic: MillBrief. Data: CNBC.

Why it matters: If you run your own delivery trucks, or your carriers talk about going electric, a volume plant should mean, if the ramp goes to plan, more of these trucks on the road and more real-world data to judge them by. The wider lesson applies to any equipment you buy: “98% uptime” is a vendor figure, and it means little until you know how it was measured, over which fleet and period, and whether planned maintenance counts as downtime. Ask the same of a robot or machine vendor, and put the definition in the contract. Our automation RFQ guide shows how to write performance terms a vendor has to meet.

The UK chancellor plans to revive a union-run training fund

John Healey will use his first Labour conference speech as chancellor in Liverpool on Monday to promise “a new age of industrialisation” built on advanced manufacturing, BBC News reports. Among the plans the BBC describes, Healey will announce that three new floating docks at HM Royal Naval Base Clyde, at Faslane, will be built in the UK rather than put out to international tender. The docks are part of a wider £15 billion upgrade programme for the Royal Navy’s shipyards and are expected to enter service in the early 2030s.

For employers, the more direct item is training. Healey will also announce the return of the Union Learning Fund, a scheme run by trade unions to help workers in England gain new skills as technology, including AI, changes the workplace. It will get £15 million, taken from existing government budgets. The BBC says employees do not need to be union members to benefit, and support ranges from essential English, maths and digital skills to training for jobs in growing industries such as advanced manufacturing.

The backdrop is not easy. The BBC says a Confederation of British Industry (CBI) survey due on Monday will show falling activity in retail and services in the three months to September, with manufacturing declining more moderately. CBI deputy chief economist Alpesh Paleja said rising energy and employment costs, combined with weak demand, continue to squeeze profit margins, and that uncertainty ahead of next month’s Budget is holding back activity in some sectors.

Why it matters: For UK manufacturers planning automation, the skills gap is often the constraint: someone has to run, program and maintain the new equipment. £15 million for all of England is modest, and the BBC report does not say how the money will be allocated or when training will be available, so treat it as a lead to follow up rather than a plan to build on. If you are weighing a first cell, our guide on whether automation is worth it for a small manufacturer sets out when hiring beats automating, and when it does not.
