An autonomous forklift that navigates by sight
The Robot Report covers ABB Robotics’ launch of the Flexley Stack F712, an autonomous forklift that uses visual simultaneous localization and mapping (vSLAM) to navigate instead of relying on pre-installed infrastructure such as markers or reflectors. The machine handles loads up to 2,000 kg at heights up to 8.5 m, and ABB says it completes a vSLAM fleet — alongside its Flexley Tug and Flexley Mover — that shares maps and works together under the company’s AMR Studio software, with VDA 5050 compatibility. ABB executives framed the launch around a familiar pain point: companies worldwide report trouble hiring forklift drivers.
Why it matters: Navigation that needs no reflectors or floor tape removes a real line item — surveying and mounting infrastructure is part of what makes mobile-robot installs cost more than the sticker price — and fleet-level interoperability is a hedge against buying a one-task island. A pilot that earned a five-fold expansion — in the chiller
Robotics & Automation News reports that a cold-storage hardware modification Locus Robotics developed for HelloFresh has let the meal-kit company expand chilled fulfillment from 100 to 500 SKUs. The deployment started small: Factor, a HelloFresh brand, piloted 13 Locus Origin robots in July 2025, saw them average 3 minutes 36 seconds per mission from order induction to box drop-off, and added 26 more robots within three months. Because the robots work and charge inside the chiller, Locus engineered a heated motor enhancement and charging modifications for continuous cold operation.
Why it matters: This is the pilot-then-scale playbook working as intended — a small deployment with clear metrics, expanded only after it proved itself. A safety-certification first for 3D sensing
Robotics & Automation News reports that sensor maker Sonair has launched ADAR One, a 3D ultrasonic sensor it describes as the world’s first safety-certified 3D sensor for human-robot collaboration. The sensor was assessed as a human-protection device under IEC 61496 and meets IEC 61508 and ISO 13849, offers 180°×180° coverage using sound rather than light, and is aimed at the blind spots of the 2D laser scanners most mobile robots use today — which only see a single horizontal plane. The company says it is already in series production, and palletizing vendor beRobox has agreed to deploy it in future systems.
Why it matters: Certification is the difference between an impressive spec sheet and a component your integrator can actually put in a risk assessment. Safety systems — scanners, fencing, speed-and-separation monitoring — are a real cost and design driver in any cell where people and machines share space, and they’re a big part of why cobots and industrial robots are priced and deployed so differently. A humanoid robot maker heads for the stock market
Robotics & Automation News reports that Agility Robotics — maker of the Digit humanoid used in manufacturing and logistics — has agreed to go public by merging with SPAC Churchill Capital Corp XI at a pre-money equity value of $2.5 billion, with more than $620 million in expected gross proceeds including a roughly $200 million PIPE led by Foxconn. The company says Digit has logged more than 65,000 hours across nine customer facilities (customers include Schaeffler, GXO, and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada) and claims over $300 million in multi-year orders for its next-generation Digit v5, subject to contractual milestones.
Why it matters: Most small and mid-size manufacturers won’t buy a humanoid any time soon — but vendor-finance news is still buyer news, because support, spare parts, and roadmap continuity all depend on the vendor still existing in five years. Read announcements like this the way you’d read a supplier’s credit report: real deployments and named customers are good signs; order books “subject to milestones” are softer than they sound.
