Industry Brief, September 14, 2026: UBTECH's humanoid plant, scaling AI pilots, IMTS
This is a retrospective edition. The brief did not run on September 14, 2026; we wrote it on September 23, 2026 using only reporting that was published on or shortly before September 14, 2026, and it makes no forecasts.
This is a retrospective edition covering September 14, 2026, using only reporting published on or up to two days before that date. Today: UBTECH starts production at a humanoid factory sized for more than 10,000 robots a year, manufacturers in India explain why factory AI pilots stall when they try to scale, the IMTS trade show opens in Chicago, and Shein adds an automated warehouse in Indiana. UBTECH starts a humanoid factory built around a 10-minute cycle
Interesting Engineering reports that UBTECH began operations at a new humanoid robot factory in Liuzhou, Guangxi, on September 12. The company’s figures: planned capacity of more than 10,000 robots a year, and a line designed to finish one robot every 10 minutes. The plant covers 14,000 square meters (about 150,700 sq ft) and builds the Walker S and Cruzr series on a flexible mixed line, so different models share one system.
Much of the automation inside is familiar. Humanoids handle depalletizing, palletizing and material loading, while cobots paired with rotating stations drive screws (each robot needs more than 2,000 of them). AGVs and driverless forklifts move material, finished robots go into an automated storage warehouse, and each unit gets a serial code that traces its parts, assembly parameters and inspection records. Siemens Digital Industries Software supplied a 1:1 digital model of the plant used to simulate material flow before physical changes. UBTECH shares rose more than 3% in early trading on September 14.
Why it matters: For buyers, the notable part is not the humanoids but the factory: screwdriving cobots, AGVs, serial-number traceability and simulation before changes are all tools a smaller plant can buy today. Capacity is not shipments: a 10-minute cycle is six robots an hour (10,000 ÷ 6 ≈ 1,670 line hours a year), and the article notes that performance will depend on shipments, customer demand and manufacturing economics. Why factory AI pilots stall when you try to copy them to the next plant
EE Times reports from an industry summit in Bengaluru, India, where speakers argued that scaling AI in manufacturing depends less on sophisticated models than on plant-level data. Ravi Ramarao, founder of Mexo Technologies, said machines, including modern ones, do not necessarily produce data in a standard format. He said getting from collecting machine data to a system that can make decisions can take three to six months, and that data from one company cannot simply be used to train a model for another.
Aditi Sharma of Uno Minda, which runs 72 plants, said proofs of concept are often run in controlled conditions, while other plants may still collect data by hand. Her advice: plan for replication before the pilot starts, not after it succeeds. A Yaskawa India operations head said most equipment installed from about 2000 onward is ready to connect to outside systems, so older plants may need only small changes.
Why it matters: The same trap applies to robot cells and software pilots in any small plant: a pilot tuned in ideal conditions can fail on the second line. Before you start, write down how the result will be copied and what data it needs, and ask who owns the problem on the business side. See why automation projects fail and the case against automating your worst process.

IMTS opens in Chicago with 1,788 exhibitors
The organiser’s release, carried by Robotics Tomorrow, says IMTS opened at McCormick Place on September 14 with 1,788 exhibiting companies (400 of them first-time exhibitors) and 1.17 million square feet of exhibit space (about 108,700 m²: 1,170,000 × 0.0929). By that morning there were 80,697 registrants, including an estimated 15,000 students, from all 50 states and 113 countries, and AMT said attendance was on pace to exceed 90,000. The show runs through September 19.
AMT, which owns the show, says visitors include tens of thousands of small job shops and contract manufacturers alongside defence contractors and major OEMs, and that the floor covers AI, automation, robotics, software, additive, machining, metrology, tooling and workholding.
Why it matters: A show this size is a good place to compare machine-tending and cobot offers side by side, but only if you arrive with your own part list, cycle times and budget. Use our RFQ generator and cobot price tracker before you walk the floor, so you can ask every booth the same questions.

Shein opens a goods-to-person warehouse in Indiana
Supply Chain Dive reports that Shein opened a 737,000-square-foot (about 68,500 m²: 737,000 × 0.0929) automated distribution centre in Lebanon, Indiana, with operations due to begin in September, according to a September 10 press release. A Shein spokesperson said it uses a goods-to-person system that brings products to employee workstations, with the aim of reducing manual tasks and improving worker safety. With its Whitestown site, Shein now has more than 2.5 million square feet of operating space in Indiana.
Why it matters: Goods-to-person systems bring the item to the worker instead of sending the worker to the item. The same logic applies at a smaller scale in a plant stores room or kitting area. Before buying, measure how much of each pick is travel, then compare the saving against the full cost of the system.
